How to make your eCommerce listing more attractive when adding a picture of your product

Tip 1: Grab your customers’ attention


1. Take special care of the photos appearing in the search results.

  • Give your customers a reason to choose your listing from hundreds of others. Your picture should be clear and appealing.

2. Keep the background in your photos as plain as possible to ensure that your product remains the centre of attention.

Don’t place items on a patterned sofa or a garden chair or else you will take attention away from the product. Not to mention the fact that you will come across as unprofessional and end up selling the sofa!

Tip 2: Make sure the right lighting puts your product image in a good light


1. Don’t use harsh flash lighting to take your product photos as it makes items look unprofessional by affecting colour integrity and producing unwanted reflections and hotspots.

2. Whatever light source you use, whether it is a standard indoor bulb, sunlight or fluorescent tubes, make sure that your camera has the correct white balance setting to produce the most accurate colours.


What is the best source of lighting? Simply look to the skies. Indirect sunlight through a window or door provides a perfect lighting source which will give your photos both bright colours and clear details

Tip 3: Avoid blurry photos at all costs


1. Avoid taking pictures with your hands.

  • A common mistake is the dreaded blurry photo caused by shaky hands.

2. Try using a tripod to give a solid base or alternatively, place your camera on a tabletop or book shelf.

Any flat surface will do as long as you are able to frame your product well and press the button without moving the camera.


Where possible, avoid holding your camera in your hands, especially when taking photos in low light, i.e. indoors. Even the steadiest hands shake and cause blurry, fuzzy images which lack detail and put off potential buyers.

Tip 5: Get the resolution right


1. Use the right picture size.

  • Let’s take eBay as an example. If you set the resolution too low, the seller will not be able to enlarge the photos; eBay may not even allow you to use a photo that does not have a sufficient number of pixels. However, setting the resolution too high will increase the loading time and may also cause problems as eBay has a maximum image size of 7MB.
  • A recommended photo size would be of around 1024 x 768 pixels. This gives you the required detail and size whilst remaining safely within eBay limits.


A lower quality item presented using high quality photos is sometimes more likely to sell than a higher quality item listed with poor quality photos.

Tip 6: Keep things simple, but pay attention to detail


1. Don’t try to overcomplicate your photos by adding ideas on how to use a product or what to combine it with.

2. Keep the spotlight single and firmly focused in on the product you wish to sell.

3. Take a lot of pictures of the item from different angles showing any details that may be considered important by the online buyer.

4. Show the scale, especially when you are selling small items such as jewelry or cosmetics.


Even if you believe the dress you are selling matches perfectly with a certain jacket, don’t be tempted to feature the jacket in the photo. Everyone’s taste is different and what may seem stylish to you could potentially lose you a sale if your customers’ taste differs from yours. The jacket may also hide certain details of the dress that are very important for the buyer.
